Things Coaches Say at Plate Meetings...

"You know, I'm an umpire too. What Level are you?" [telegraphing all of his pending arguments in advance, I guess, e.g. "When I umpire, I would never call that", etc.]

"Don't worry about me fellas, I never argue anything!" [a certain ejection at some point; only the nastiest coaches say this]

"You again?" [Well, if you don't like doing a game with me, I can fix that right now....]

"We only brought 9 players today blue, so be nice!" [I guess his players get special latitude on the EJs, huh? NOT!]

"I want to see some hustle from you guys today. You're being paid to be here, so I expect to see you earning it!" [I actually agree with him in principle, but to say it...sheesh!]

"Don't worry about my bench, Blue; I told them you're a good guy and won't make any mistakes." [Guess he didn't get the memo about lowering expectations, then exceeding them.]

and my personal favourite:

"Listen, Blue, I left my heart medication at home, so don't let me get too excited today, OK?" [So, is that 5 compressions to 1 breath, or 15 to 2? The coroner always asks....]

Where’s the strike zone going to be today, Blue, so I know what to tell my players? [I never, ever, walk anybody, skip. Better tell them to swing the bat.]

Honestly, what age group(s) are those things said at? I have never been spoken to like that in 25 years of umpiring.

Nor have I. The exception being the line Roger mentioned about where the strike zone will be for the game.

I heard the line "Where’s the strike zone going to be today, Blue, so I know what to tell my players?" eons ago at an 11U AAU game. THe other stuff I have only read about.

I would always say "One level above you!" and let him figger it out..
