Re: Article on MLB umpires

I live right in the middle of Midwest League. . . I can only imagine what it must be like for one of the MWL guys to work a game that goes extras in Cedar Rapids, IA, get done around 10:30-11:00...

Re: MLB Ump Randy Marsh

Santana threw a 91 mph fastball. No matter what kind of mask it is going to ring your bell a little bit.

Re: Umpire calling 'Foul Tip'

Albeit the umpire did screw up by saying "foul tip," in this case the ball is still live an the runner should "play to the whistle." I believe part of it was the runner's fault for not continuing...

Re: Who's call is it.

One situation that I can think of where the BU wouldn't be turning is if the ball is a little squibber out into no man's land where the P, charging 3b or charging SS may be able to make the play,...

Re: Umpires who are intentionally hit

I don't believe that this has ever happened to me. However, there have been a few times where the catcher went one way and the ball went the other way. Once play ends (i.e. catcher picks up the...

Re: J. Damon, Artist

This reminds me of a statement a rules interpreter made at a meeting once with both coaches and umpires present. He said, "Gentlemen, the strike zone is 23 inches wide. 17" of white, 1/2" of black...

Re: Pitcher wearing sweat bands

I was working a HS Varsity game last week (FED) between rivals. Home team pitcher has a Rawlings glove that has a gold logo on the wrist.

VC comes out before first inning while pitcher is...

Two Balls On The Field

I know I have seen this in either the FED rule book or case book but can't seem to find it, but what do you do when there are two baseballs in live territory and the DT plays the wrong ball.

For...

Re: sunglasses

Well, if a kid wants to wear Dolce & Gabbana sunglasses on the field, you might have a case for sunglasses to be considered jewelry, otherwise, I would say no.

Re: Well it happened

I have been hit twice, both times in C. The first one was a rocket that I turned to the side to try to avoid it but still got hit in the side below the ribs. The second time was a ground ball that...

Re: Funny things coaches say

Here are a couple that I've heard or have heard about:

I call a belt high strike on the outside corner, Coach yells, "That can't be a strike, he's the best hitter in the state."

I still...

Re: BR Passes runner with bases loaded

I agree with Tom about the number of runs that score Sitch A=1 run Sitch B=3 runs. I kind of wonder though in Sitch A with 2 outs, why the runner wouldn't be off on contact.

I guess that's the...

Score the Run?

R3, R1, One Out. FED Rules

BR hits a foul fly ball down LF line, R3 tags up, F7 catches the ball and throws home. Seeing the throw going home, R1 without tagging, heads to second. R3 touches...

Re: kerwin danley hit again

HeyBlue, you didn't misread my post. I wouldn't wish that on anybody. But for some of the previous debates regarding use of the HSM, I was saying just what you said that the HSM may have saved...

It's OK to dump people. . .

Reading another thread where it is discussed when an assistant coach should be ejected, made me come up with a question.

I have no problem with ejecting people. I don't usually get any...

Re: should have been no catch

The video shows the volutary release therefore it should've been an out.

In a two-man, since no one would be available to go out on this ball, I'm not so sure that the voluntary release would...

Re: umpire awards

My association covers baseball, basketball, football and softball. We give out two awards. One award is for the new umpire (2-3 yrs. of service) who has shown the most improvement. The second...

Re: kerwin danley hit again

I'm sure that I'm going to get ripped by someone here but I don't there is a better example of why wearing a HSM is a good idea. Danley probably would've had a concussion and a line of stitches had...

Re: Dropped 3rd strike

Just to add to what Dash said, no run can score when the third out is recorded because a runner is forced to vacate a base because the batter became a runner. Doesn't apply to this play but always...

Re: Memories?

I was fortunate when I moved to Illinois that pretty much every kid in the neighborhood was between 8 and 12 years old. It was easy to get a game going with about 6-7 guys per side.

When we...

Re: Use of BLUE when addressing team

I don't have a problem with being addressed as "Blue." It beats a coach or player getting your attention by yelling "Hey A$$h07e."

Re: Quick opinion question

You're Out, and You're Ugly Too is probably the best baseball book from the umpire's perspective I've ever read, albeit I have not read Ron Luciano's books.

Re: Budget Cuts

Most schools here in Central Illinois now have a "pay to play" policy for about 6-7 years. It varies between $50-100 per sport depending on the school. However, most schools do discount fees if a...

Re: Going for help (No)

On a pulled foot situation, there are two things that go on: a judgement and a rules application.

The judgement is whether or not the BR beat the ball to the base, whether you call safe or out,...
