Re: Replay Statistics

Check out how some of the teams have such low success rates. That's hard to explain.

The difference results from different teams' replay consultants (former umpires?) looking at the slow motion...

Re: Where do you place the runner?

Since this is High School, don't we have a rule covering this? When an umpire's call is reversed, we place runners so that neither side is put at a disadvantage.

It seems clear that the defense...

Re: Runner Lane Violation Yes / No?

By the way, the OP is a good example of a scenario where, had the runner been in the lane, the throw would have hit him because the throw was right down the middle of the 3 foot lane. Not a true...

Re: Runner Lane Violation Yes / No?

The problem with this kind of interpretation/training is that it assumes you know in advance that the ball will hit the runner. In real life, you don't know that. Things happen fast, you have other...

Re: Runner Lane Violation Yes / No?

I did not say that nothing could be done. I'm saying that at least in LL, the rules offer you no easy solutions. The RIM literally says "there is no easy solution." Ejecting the offending player is...

Re: Runner Lane Violation Yes / No?

In youth baseball, when a batter throws the bat, the umpire has very little he can do about it. "Address the manager, ask the manager to pull the player," etc. Meanwhile nothing gets the parents --...

Re: Runner Lane Violation Yes / No?

Could you explain how Mike was "seeing this with HS eyes?" The concept of a quality throw is an MLB distinction, not a HS one.

Re: Runner INT?

I'm not sure I would post this kind of thing unless you've substantially changed the circumstances and so forth. What if the person you're describing reads this, or one of the coaches?

Re: Keep Your Eyes on the Ball

I was watching a LL majors game recently where the SS made this play. He didn't get the out, but it was close.

Some players are clever enough to see opportunities for easy outs. They know the...

Anyone have two outs on this play?

Re: Umpire Interference?

The umpire kicked a ball inadvertently, that was on the ground. Why was it on the ground? Next time, catch the ball.

Tennis These Days

The replay of Serena Williams' meltdown proves that the abuse of officials isn't limited to baseball. It's rather sad to see an adult unable to understand why calling an umpire a "thief" should...

Re: Can a Pitcher Balk after he starts his delivery?

At first I thought this is nothing, but there are situations where pitchers are sloppy, and you don't really know which position he intends to use, so he steps on the rubber, brings his hands...

Re: Rules Changes

What Mike was saying is that the 2 minutes represents 32 minutes total spent on innings changes.

If you're talking about "impact" of an additional 30 seconds, it will be a wash. The likely reason...

Re: Hawaii at LLWS in CA

I get the impression that Omiyage often involves food. So perhaps you can bring Mike the next size up in umpire pants.

Seriously: I went to Hawaii just recently. 10 days of local ahi tuna, the...

Re: Rules Changes

What we're witnessing is a typical feature of what we must call the "Bureacratic American State." We all realize that the game is taking too long. So instead of dealing with the real problem, they...

Re: Hawaii at LLWS in CA

So you're saying that only baseball in Hawaii has the omiyage? They don't do that for football, soccer, table tennis, etc.?

It sounds like what you're saying primarily is that Hawaii is different...

How is it very different?

Everything you've described is the exactly same as the small town where I live.

Re: Texas v Georiga Games

Sounds like the problem is driven by wanting to pad umpires' egos: 3- and 4-man crews yield more tournament slots.

Re: Texas v Georiga Games

Whenever I hear someone wanting more umpires on the field, I wonder: how many plays are really missed by a 2-man crew? We know there are some holes in the coverage, but we're talking about tag ups...

Re: Texas v Georiga Games

This play could easily happen on a 90-foot diamond. The difference is that on a 90-field, the number of plays that an umpire might get right outweigh the number of situations where he gets in the...

Re: Texas v Georiga Games

There is no way this situation is covered in any manual or training. Is there such a thing as a 6-man manual?

Had you read this play correctly, where would you have stationed yourself?

Re: Texas v Georiga Games

Well, what should he have done differently? One of his duties is fair/foul, right? To have avoided this, he would need to have run toward the infield.

I can see no earthly reason for 6-man...

Re: Replay

I'm not sure what exactly you're asking, however, I don't see why everything couldn't be reviewed, provided you had the "challenge limit." Most people recognize that if everything gets reviewed, then...

Re: Replay

I agree that a catch/no catch review would be reasonable assuming no runners are on base.

If runners are present, then it starts to become a problem.

Are LL's replay review rules printed...
