Re: Replay

I agree that a catch/no catch review would be reasonable assuming no runners are on base.

If runners are present, then it starts to become a problem.

Are LL's replay review rules printed...

Re: Definition of Force Play

The third baseman should have tagged R3 *before* stepping on the base, and then the throw to second was all that was necessary for the triple play. No idea why they were chasing down R1.

Re: Hawaii at LLWS in CA

I just got to see this video. I have no problem with the HBP call. It's hard to see in the video, but the umpire reacted immediately, I don't see how a person with any experience reacts like that...

Re: 2018-19 Baseball Rules Changes Focus on Pitching Mechanics

I happen to be sitting in a hotel room in Kauai. I drove, walked around a bit. No baseball here.

Re: 2018-19 Baseball Rules Changes Focus on Pitching Mechanics

Similar: pitcher in windup: steps off with his left foot and I call Balk! He then reminds me that he's left-handed. Arghgh. This is the kind of mistake that you can make once. It's like a mulligan in...

Re: 2018-19 Baseball Rules Changes Focus on Pitching Mechanics

Even though it was your call, doesn't mean you can't get information from someone with a better angle. Pulled foot, dropped balls, missed swipes, are all legit reasons to correct a call.

Re: Tangle / Untangle?

My feeling exactly: we're overthinking it. The comment to the rule quoted above doesn't really address whether a fielder is "protected." It just says when the catcher is fielding the ball, which he...

Re: 2018-19 Baseball Rules Changes Focus on Pitching Mechanics

A wise man once said "Umpires are always encouraged to get the rule right at all levels...put the pride aside and get the call right. Even NCAA has been hot on this..."

Re: 2018-19 Baseball Rules Changes Focus on Pitching Mechanics

Seems like something that should have been put in the mechanics manual, not really a rules change.

The NFHS rulebook has a section for "official signals." Umpire-to-umipre signals don't belong...

Re: Tangle / Untangle?

Nonsense, a batter who bunts has the element of surprise and will be well down the line long before anyone gets to the ball. In this case, he wasn't sure it was fair, and that hesitation allowed F2...

Re: Tangle / Untangle?

I just don't agree with that. To me, once a batter hesitates, he can run behind the catcher. That's the essence of all the tangle/untangle drills. In this situation, unless something is intentional,...

Ejection vs. Fine

Is it true that a player can be merely fined by an umpire, in lieu of an ejection? Check this out:

How about, "Madam thanks to remarks like that, it's hard to recruit game officials."

The frustrating part is that we all know that some of the most contentious calls are close tag plays at second...

Comeback Remark Needed

Yesterday, I was working a one-man game, 11U, LL rules.

Wild pitcher, R1 steals second, catcher retrieves the ball and fires to second base. It was close enough to make the play interesting, but...

Fair/Foul Getting Blocked

I've had this problem several times this season: I'm the PU and the batter hits a blooper right over the right field line. Following the mechanics, I straddle the line to make the call, and just as...

Re: There’s just something special about Little League . . .

Everything that people complain about LL -- poor level of play, obnoxious coaches, poor facilities, untrainted officials, etc., -- disappear at the tournament, especially a State Tournament.

The...

Re: A real train wreck

I also agree that the call should have been verbalized, but had both umpires verbalized their calls, we would have the same confusion, possibly worse.

On the other hand, if U1 strongly verbalizes...

Re: A real train wreck

Great reason to stick with 2-man mechanics! Hardly any LL umpires know 3-man mechanics and those who do are using a mishmash of 90-foot versions, not necessarily LL's 60-foot version.

I like how...

Re: Rule for occupying base

Are you willing to elaborate? The runner needs a reason to return to first. You're saying it wasn't a tag-up. What was it?

Re: District Championship - Double Header

Do you mean in "your neck of the woods" for tournament play? or regular season?

What I'm talking about is a hard-and-fast playing rule, it's not a local practice:
