I am sure many of you noticed that Jim Joyce (named by players and managers as the top rated umpire) did not work at any level of the MLB post season this year. Does anyone know if that was by choice or did MLB want to distance itself from that missed play at first?

I would say that would be 100% the case. Doubtful anybody would go on record with anything like that...but minimizing controversy is always a priority I suppose. (Not saying I agree)

I don't know about controversy, but I'm sure they didn't want any sort spotlight shown on the umpires. Good, bad or otherwise.
IMO, that's the way is should be. Nobody, aside from us umpire geeks, watches the game to see the officials. Even the weepy ones.

I don't know JJ, but I get the feeling from what I have seen that he may have opted out of doing any post-season games himself for the same reason. I am that before the post-season list is made, I bet many veteran umpires often opt out of the post-season for many various personal reasons. JJunderstands that the last thing he would want to be is a distraction during a PO game. News crews with the need to find stories to tell would seek him out and constantly bring ump the perfect-game situation every time a play involved him. I am afraid that will probably happen for the rest of his career.

JJ Is a respected umpire in my book and one of the best. I Think what has been said is correct he may have Opt out. But then again he also understands the fine mircoscope he would of been under in the PO. JJ Is a well respected in baseball.

That's an interesting take..he may very well have opted out of the playoffs. I hadn't thought of that.

I really understand that JJ is one of the best and he respectfully admitted that he was wrong, but why would you give a guy a spot in a po game when he booted such a easy and big call

Because is you go out and put in 21 great years of work for MLB you can be forgiven if you make one mistake.

Who are they? I thought we're talking about umpires.

He is always rated one of the best umps year over year in polls conducted. Anyone know why he is never named Crew Chief. He has more seniority over many who are...

I'm guessing there were two reasons he didn't work the postseason.
One, the press would have been covering him, and rehashing the whole incident, taking the spotlight off the game itself. No logical reason to bring it up again.
Two, would be his bellowing, walrus in heat, strike calls. Good God, why is that even tolerated? It's just stupid, and again, putting the spotlight where it doesn't belong.
He blew a call because of a metal lapse. He forgot the simple, yet advanced mechanic of "flipping the switch" (some of you guys know what this situational mechanic is). Now that's what he's going to be remembered for. Just like Timmy Mac is going to live with the smell of pine tar. Oh well.

Three, he recused himself, knowing the court of public opinion would be "Why is an umpire who made a horrible call in the postseason?"
