Last nights game, R1, 2 strikes, batter check swings on ball in dirt (PU signals out) ball blocked by F2 - R1 tries to advance to 2nd. Batter walks across plate in front of F2 who is making throw on advancing R1. Throw from F2 goes into outfield. runner advances to 3rd. Clemson HC comes out asking about why no interference called. Not sure why PU didnt call interference?

Let's assume he did call interference, since batter is already out, does R1 go back to 1st and only called out if in PU's judgement he thought F2 could retire?

No, runner is out when interference is called, period. With obstruction, this type of situation is true, but with interference, he's out when it's called.

7.09(e)Any batter or runner who has just been put out, or any runner who has just scored, hinders or impedes any following play being made on a runner. Such runner shall be declared out for the interference of his teammate So the umpire's judgment is in whether or not he 'hinders or impedes' before calling interference, not in whether or not he would be out after calling interference.

If you are going to quote rules use the correct ruleset.

no the runner is not always out...

NCAA Rule 7-11-F..

f. The batter intentionally or unintentionally interferes with the catcher’s
fielding or throwing by stepping out of the batter’s box or making any
other movement that hinders a defensive player’s action at home plate.
PENALTY for f.—The runner(s) return to the base occupied at the time
of interference.
Exceptions—
(1) If the runner is advancing to home plate and there are fewer than two
outs, the runner, instead of the batter, is out.
(2) The batter is not out if any runner attempting to advance is put out,
or if the runner trying to score is called out for batter’s interference.
(3) If the batter also should strike out on the play, it is a double play.
(4) If a batter/runner and a catcher fielding the ball make contact, no call
shall be made unless either player attempts to alter the play.

Just cause the batter walked across the plate, doesn't mean there is INT.. If the HP umpire did not feel there was no INT then it should not be called...

NCAA rules if the batter strikes out and there is INT the runner is also called out.

Most importantly is it is a Umpires Judgment call regardless of which rule set you use.
Even after watching the replay I did not see any interference.
He got the call right, I my Judgment.

I agree w/ jarhead, of course. I don't think he interfered w/ the throw which hit the ground 8' in front of the bag before going into the outfield.

Should be a good series starting tonight @ 7:30!!

Go COCKS!!!

My father graduated from South Carolina. When I was young and saw USC on college scores, I always thought it was South Carolina.
