If a starter leaves the game, say the clean up hitter, when can he re-enter the game as anything other than the 4th batting spot?
Can he enter defensively for a player in another batting slot if he never comes up to bat? (e.g., comes out at the end of the second, can he go in for, say, the lead-off batter for defensive purposes in the bottom of the 6th?)
(We've only left the continuous order behind as we start playoffs and I'm trying to parse through.)

Yes if the lead off batter has played 6 defensive outs and batted at least once.

LL Rulebook 3.03
Before a substitute can replace a player, the player:
Must have played 6 defensive outs.
Must have completed one time at bat.

NO. Regular season rules:
You can replace a player at any time. If that player is a starter you can re-enter him later to finish his MPR. If the replaced player was a sub the player might not meet MPR so there might be a violation of that but it is not a violation of the sub rules.
A starter can re-enter anywhere in the lineup but only after the player who went in for him has batted once and played 6 consectuive defensive outs.

Remember tournament rules differ....must return to the same slot in the batting order.

And in the tournament a sub entering for the first time cannot be removed until he's done his MPR (ampunt varies this year).
In the tournament, subs can re-enter. They cannot in regular season.

OK. I did a search and could not find the answer. And rather than start a new thread, I thought I would just add to this one:
LL Playoff Junior Game (13-14YO).
A sub comes in for a starter and this sub gets his 2 and 1. Then another sub comes in for the original sub in the same position and in the same spot in the batting order and gets his 2 and 1. The starter never reentered the game until the second sub got his 2 and 1.
The opposing manager thought this was illegal. My partner and I were not sure to be honest. I thought it was legal, my partner thought it was illegal but wasn't sure. On the surface it sounds OK and I could not remember anything about it in the rule book. The opposing manager's team ended up winning 4-3.
I checked the LL rulebook and could not find anything. My question: was this sub for sub a legal move?

While not specifically covered, I see this as perfectly legal - both subs met MPR and the starter re-entered after his sub completed MPR.
Subs can't re-enter, Starters may re-enter after sub completes MPR. Nothing says that you can't sub - MPR, then Sub - MPR, then bring starter back in.

That is exactly what I thought. And there is nothing in the LL rule book that says you cannot do this.
Anybody else say differently?
