I'm a LL dad (and scorekeeper and sometime coach . . .) trying to understand the rules as my son loves the game, and it was never really my game. A couple of plays from today had me thinking about tags and drops, and hoping for some enlightenment (I've learned a lot browsing the archives here . . .)

(1) R sliding into base, tag on the upper thigh, and as the slide continues, R slaps at the glove, knocking the ball loose. [I assume this is out, but in a quick look at the outs sections, I'm not sure what the call is.]

(2) R sliding into base, tag on the leg dislodges the ball with impact. [My understanding is that is not an out as the fielder lost the ball in making the tag.

(3) R is running, F tries to tag his body, and R lifts his shoulder into the tag (not violently) as the tag takes place, and the ball comes loose. [Is this a failure to slide or avoid?]

Any guidance on the criteria used on these types of place would be appreciated. (Something akin to (1) and (3) occurred in a minors game today -- both were called outs. I'm not questioning either, and realize there is an element of YHTBT, but trying to understand what umps look for on those calls.)

I will give you this as I do not umpire LL,

A fielder must have complete control of the ball during and after the touch. If the fielder bobbles or drops the ball due to a lack of control of himself or the ball, or due to incidental contact w/ a runner, it is not a tag. This sort of thing also gets into the voluntary release of the ball, if it is voluntary this alone is proof of control. A catch and a tag are similar concepts.

Slapping at a fielder's gloved ball or hand w/ ball to attempt to dislodge the ball is not legal. If it were, you would see some interesting plays on the TV at home plate and other bases.

Hope this helps

Yea just ask A-Rod what happened when he did that in the world series

Out and maybe out of the game.

Safe

HTBT: If intentional: out, and maybe out of the game if not, safe.

HTBT = Had To Be There
