Hello to all! My name is Will from Knoxville, TN. I have just recently gotten into umpiring. I'm a prior military police man (veteran) and played some college ball. I was a catcher and feel as though I have a pretty good grasp on the game. I'm always wanting to learn more and look forward to picking up a lot of great info from all of you. I have played baseball with GREAT umpires and I have played baseball with HORRIBLE umpires, I want to be a great one. Reason being, I dont want the kids to feel as though they were cheated by a bad ump. I'm sure with the experience in blue and the help from you guys, I can do it.

Thanks for your help and insight!

I didn't figure you did just had to ask, and hope that you enjoy the site. There is lots of knowledge here and as long as you are willing to learn and get better as you go you will be fine. Read the rules and do not be afraid to ask question. We all started out just like you. Have a good season and keep us posted on how you are doing.

Arm-- First of all, thanks for your service.

Find someone in your area you can look up to as a mentor. Ask them questions. Watch them work. Work with them when possible. Be willing to work as often as you can. Don't ever say "no" to an assignor if at all possible. The best way to get games as a new official is to be available.

Understand that becoming a good umpire is a process--not a destination. Evrey game you work, try to improve something.

Finally, understand that you'll hear advise that may not be "good." You have to decide what to incorporate into your umpiring, and what to dismiss. This site can help you with that decision. Most (not all) of the posts here are worth consideration...

Good luck, and welcome to the madness!
