Does any one know when they will announce which umpires will be selected to move up to the major leagues for those that had retired this past season?

Hey Brian:
Isn't PBUC in the final week right now?
Traditionally there is a down week and then final "adjusted" assignments are made.
Correct?

I have no idea. I heard there was a training session for them (about 2 weeks or so?) at Dodgertown - - that was about two weeks ago.

I think he means the guys named to fill the 4 official vacancies on the MLB staff due to retirements....not guys being offered jobs in MiLB

See you understood what I was asking and yes I mean those that will be named to fill the 4 official vacancies on the MLB Staff such as Rob Drake.

I was answering a different question (from Tim C) when I wrote about the PBUC stuff.
-2 on your score for not paying attention.

The issue is this:
After PBUC, traditionally MiLB puts out a press release.
The release tells assignments from Short A through AAA and all advancements. This also includes those moving up.
MLB will then release a presser that names the new MLB Umpires.
Normally it all ties together.

The four MLB spots have been filled... A press release should be out shortly.
The PBUC Course finishes the 21st. Those umpires selected will fill vacancies in the rookie leagues(Arizona, Gulf Coast).

Any idea who was selected?
My guess is Drake, Hoye, Knight, & Fairchild & Barry.

Not quite.
In this politically correct day and age, discrimination is front and centre.
With the retirement of Merriwether, MLB loses one of its two African-Americans (Diaz and Bucknor are of Cuban decent).
Damian Beal or Adrian Johnson will be promoted, even if they are not ranked in the top 5 on the depth chart.

I have been credibly informed that Drake and Hoye are prominent in the small group being considered. Hadn't heard anything I would find worth repeating about anyone else.
There's a young guy from our association who is down at Vero now, and we're all pulling for him to get offered a contract.

Although Chuck hasnt officially retired, it certainly makes sense that they might try to promote a minority anyway with 4 openings.
IMO, Drake & Hoye are locks. Knight seems like almost a lock as well, as he has been up a long time and worked a substantial amount of games. Doesnt seem to make sense for MLB to keep him up this long if they werent going to give him a job.

Why is Merriweather going to retire?
This is the problem with our PC country. We need the best person for the job. Who cares if they are all white guys. If they are better then anyone else then why should someome who is less skilled get promoted. Thats my take.

You have to remember its a ruff road to get to the majors and all of them are trying to get there its not about color or race that should never be the real factor for any job and I do not believe it is. Everyone should get a fair shake and look at the selection. but getting the best of the best and most qualified is not always the best selection either in all cases. I see it every day.
But they are evaluated and spend many years in the low minors moving up to the next higher level because someone says that they have passed the evaluation process and should be promoted. Just stop and think how long it took baseball to accept Jackie Robinson and Larry Doby or for that matter Emment Ashford the first to get to the majors and others followed it just a whole lot of hard work and (IMO) think that every umpire should get a crack at it they have paid their dues wouldn't you say. And yes I am pulling for Rob Drake and the rest of them I wished that they all get the call.

And this is why America still has a black and White issue... If they are not one of the top 4 umpires, then they should not make it...plan and simple.. same as NCAA and NFL wants more Black coaches.. well if there are not enough qualified coaches then they should not get the job...I can care less what color a guy is as long as he can do a job.

Hey buddy, I hear you.
I understand the concept of affirmative action programs.
But I cannot stand when someone undeserving of anything is promoted above those who have worked for it simply because they are a minority. Like a few years ago when there was some push to bump some 9 year old boy from Afghanistan to the front of the heart transplant waiting list. He didn't even have Canadian citizenship and people wanted him moved ahead of those who had been waiting for years! Still don't understand that one.
To quote Remember the Titans, "I don't care if you're white, black, yellow, blue, or orange..." (may not be exactly correct by you get the point)
The jobs should go to the best. But, there will always been incompetant morons, like the professor presiding over the ethics class I currently am sitting in, who insist in absolute equality for all.
