Clarification please. Even if a pitched ball hits the ground before the batter, its still a pitched ball and therefore the batter is awarded first, assuming they make an attempt to move etc...??

Secondly, with the little guys, is it always a free base or is there a rule of thumb for how far out? I had a situation where the ball bounced five feet in front of the plate and was going so slow, I just awarded a ball.

Read the definition of "ball" in Rule 2.00 and you should have your answer.

Thanks. It never occurred me to look in that section. 6.08 says the same thing without the specific example. Thanks for the clarification.

Any pitch that bounces before the plate AND IS NOT SWUNG AT is a ball. Also, ANY pitch that hits that batter AND IS NOT SWUNG AT is a HBP and the batter gets 1st (unless he intentionally gets hit)

Any pitch that bounces before the plate AND IS NOT SWUNG AT is a ball.

It could also be a HBP.

It could bounce into the batter's bat and become a batted ball.

Not ANY pitch, just a bounced pitch. If an in flight pitch hits the batter in the strike zone it's a dead ball and a strike - not a HBP.

Simply, a pitch that bounces before the plate can be anything but a called strike.

A pitch is a ball delivered to the batter by the pitcher. It doesn't matter how it gets to the batter. If the batter is hit by a pitch while attempting to avoid it, he is awarded first base.

Rules: 2.00 PITCH, 6.08(b).
