Left handed pitcher, runner on 1B. F1 steps towards home while he throws to 1B. BU calls out, "That's a balk!" The throw is wild and sails over F3's head and goes out of play. Where do we place R1?

Second base. Why would it be anything else (unless I'm completely mis-reading the play)?

BlueGus quote: "2B...As soon as the 1Bman missed the ball..its dead award the balk."

Not quite true. Had the ball been overthrown and stayed alive, the runner may advance to third at his own risk. The runner is protected to second on the balk call.

Of course this is with the NCAA and ORB rule set.

In FED, the balk is an immediate dead ball.

Doesn't matter - the answer is the same - 2B

"2B."

It appears to me that we are at an impass. I think we can agree universially that the award of 2B ONLY for Fed is correct.

It appears too me that we have a split vote (blues/reds) on OBR.

Someone else care to give a citation?

In the OP, the throw went out of play. There is nothing to debate. Runner gets 2B - all codes.

Willy tossed in the "stays in play" which changes the situation. And for the altered situation he is correct.

Just for clarification, in the OP, award is 2nd.

FED = Immediate Dead Ball. Award R1 2B.

OBR ball is live:

OBR 8.06
APPROVED RULING: In cases where a pitcher balks and throws wild, either to a base or to home plate, a runner or runners may advance beyond the base to which he is entitled at his own risk.

....................

I certaintly can't disagree with that, but the question posed in the O/P was:

"Where do we PLACE R1?"

One from the rubber.

Two from the field.

Kind of hard to balk off the rubber in the OP.

Toodles,

It would make a diif...Immediate dead ball in Fed...NCAA and OBR are still live ball.

Except that in the OP, the ball was thrown out of play. So, it's a "nearly immediate" dead ball in those other codes -- and either way, R1 is awarded second.
