In a collegiate league using MLB rules, has anyone encountered a situation where the team has a player/manager? How would you handle mound visits since manager is already on the field (playing 1B)? Infielders consult with pitchers all the time. I need to address in by-laws for '09.

If he asks for "time" it is a visit.

In our adult league in which we play NCAA rules conferences are handled like this.

If the manager is an outfielder and asks for time to go to the mound, visit

If it's an infielder, if it's brief, rangeing from something in passing to a couple of sentences, no visit

If it's an infielder and the visit is lengthy, visit

this is from the leagues website, "If the manager is a defensive infielder, he will be allowed to approach the pitcher without being charged a trip provided the discussion is brief and is terminated when directed by the umpire"

From JR Chapter 19

NOTE: Relative to trips, a player-manager is considered to be a manager and, as such, is limited to the above dictates regarding visits to the pitcher. A player-coach is considered to be a player unless he abuses his privilege, whereupon he, too, shall be subject to the above limitations. A player-manager who substitutes for himself is allowed to continue to direct his team from the bench or coach’s box.

In a nutshell if an infielder is also the player / manager any conversation between himself and F1 better be short and sweet.

Rich, if they are playing by OBR, I believe it would only be a visit if he asks for time then goes to the mound, wouldn't it?. I have never run into the situation myself.
