another ump & I were talking about a possible play using mlb rule set, & yes it could be any other rule set.
ball hit down the left field line, rather shallow, r3 tagging on the play but obviously leaves early. 3rd basemen standing on 3rd for no apparent reason. the left fielder catches the ball turns believing he has possible play at the plate. 3rd basemen, standing on 3rd, catchs the ball, turns & throws home. runner, close play at the plate, but r3 scores. is the runner out at 3rd because he did not tag up merely because the 3rd basemen caught the ball from left fielder while in contact with the base.

an appeal must be deliberate and obvious to EVERYONE...or verbal.

This is what is referred to as an "accidental" appeal and should be ignored.

Like an earlier poster said, unless it is obvious they are appealing (throwing to a base while runner is retreating after caught fly ball) or they tell you they are appealing, let it go.
