Player Anthony is listed as the starting pitcher with Player Brandon serving as the DH hitting in the 4-hole. Player Charlie is starting at third base, hitting in the 3-hole

Later in the game, manager makes pitching change in which, Player Charlie is now the pitcher, and Player Anthony is now playing third base.

What becomes of Player Brandon, the DH.

I rule that the team loses the DH (Brandon) as he was hitting for (Anthony) as Anthony is acting as the pitcher. AmLegion rules (DH for pitcher only). Since a player that was serving as a defensive player now becomes the pitcher and the pitcher assumes a defensive role he must now bat, and the DH cannot change batting position in the batting order.

Since when is being a pitcher not a defensive player?

The Designated Hitter was devised by the devil as a way to drive umpires crazy... Does anyone else get a headache reading OBR 6.10???

eagle-- Even though the wording in your post may not have been 100% technically correct (as BrianC pointed out) I agree with your outcome. AL rules permit DH only for F1. The DH cannot change position in the batting order. In your example, the DH is not substituting for another defensive player, thus requiring the original F1 to bat in the substituted position. Seems like the coach must now decide who he wants to play and bat in the #4 spot-- Anthony or Brandon...

Excuse me while I go get an aspirin... JB

Brian,

He said American Legion rules, I presume "Senior" due to his "DH for pitcher only" parenthetical.

This is the same as the OBR DH rule, which includes the statement:

...Once the game pitcher is switched from the mound to a defensive position this move shall terminate the Designated Hitter role for the remainder of the game. ...

Ergo, in eagle_12's sitch, the DH role is terminated and the starting pitcher, now F5, bat's in the slot in the batting order formerly occupied by the DH.

Under Fed rules, the DH would be allowed to continue - he would now simply be batting for F5 rather than the pitcher.
