I was totally shocked at a situation that came up today. I was BU in C, runners on 2nd and third. U12 rec league post season tourney. F1 bounces a ball out in front of the plate and ball bounces up and pretty much rolls up my partners right arm. He grabs the ball and throws it back to the pitcher who (for obvious reasons) isn't expecting it and the ball goes rolling in to CF....obviously I immediately called time (as did my partner) but I wanted to crawl under the third base bag....I guess I know the answer to my question, and I just needed to vent a little bit. lol.

I don not understand this situation. I can not envision what happened.

Sounds like a reaction without thinking, or as we sometimes call it-- a brain fart... Glad to hear that both of you realized and called time.

My question is-- did the offensive coach say anything? Because that might be one where you just have to say "Oops, my bad, coach..."

Was your partner's arm in fair territory? If not, it's just a foul ball. If it was in fair, then you guye screwed up, If it wasn't fair, what's the problem

not a foul ball the pitch bounced and hit my partners arm. He caught the ball and threw it back to the pitcher who was coming home to cover on the would be PB. Since the pitcher was sprinting towards the plate to cover he wasn't able to react to my partners throw. The ball began rolling in to center field and the offensive coach was pretty cool about it, he just said something like "hey blue how come we can't run on that" in a joking manner. Not really a big deal, but it sure didn't make us look very good.

If an umpire handles a live ball it becomes dead immediately and play stops. If it is a batted ball where the BR has not reached 1B, it should be treated as an inadvertant foul call.

If the umpire is touched by a batted fair ball, the ball is dead and batter gets 1st (with the same exceptions that apply to a runner being touched by a fair batted ball). In this case (the ump grabs the ball) I think I would treat it the same way you would - foul.

sorry, I assumed that it was a batted ball. Dead ball. Little Johnny didn't get to advance as a result. Oh well nobody died. No reason to want to crawl under a rock.

While I agreee that's true in FED, I think it's NOT true in OBR or NCAA. If the plate umpire had realized that he "caught" a live ball, he should just drop it and let play continue.

I do agree that once he threw it back to F1, that it becomes a 9.01c play, and that calling time and returning the runners is the best course of action.
