Here is a thread I think will be interesting. Yesterday I worked at a horrible field. It was my first time at Keyport HS, in Keyport, NJ. The field has a running track going through right field! Click on this link to see this field for yourself!

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=keyport,+nj&ie=UTF8&ll=40.430787,-74.192777&spn=0.00187,0.003626&t=k&z=18

Do you know of other weird fields? Or great fields? If you want to show it to everyone else this is how:

• Go to Google Maps: http://maps.google.com
• Locate the field.
• Click on the "Satellite" button to show the photo image of the field.
• Zoom in as much as the website will allow to show the field.
• Click on the words "Link to this page" just above the photo image.
• A box will come up. Copy the URL under the words "Paste link in email or IM."
• Paste the URL into your post here in this thread.

This way every can see the image of the field you are describing.

Its not the soccer field but notice the tennis courts. Seems like every game i've done there there is a girls tennis match and they get bombarded with foul balls. Surpised no one has gotten beaned.

LOL - remember the movie with Richard Pryor - "Brewster's Millions" - their field had a train track going through the outfield..... hahahaaaaa - that picture reminded me of that.

I can't beat a track through right field but this is the weirdest I've seen. Note they do remove the bleachers during baseball season.

Here is mine. Lamar Porter Field in Little Rock, AR. This is also my favorite field. Old minor league park that Brooks Robinson played in. But the great thing is that left center to right center field in a hill about 10-12 feet high. Watching high schoolers run up or dive up in for a fly ball is great. However the pick doesn't do it any justice

Abington High School, Abington, MA....you need a golf cart to get all the way back to the "back stop".

When the ball crosses over a line...it's dead...advance the runners 1 from the mound...2 from the field!

Yeah...that's a running track too!

Cretin HS, St. Paul, MN. Left field and left-center had the running track run through it. The track was 6 inches below grade, had concrete curbs on each side, and a 15 foot long, 10 foot high hill leading to a wrought-iron fence with brick pillars.

This field was deemed acceptable when Paul Molitor was a student there, but was changed after the school started producing high-profile talent in the mid to late eighties. Steve Walsh (Miami Hurricanes QB) played left field, and nearly ate one of the curbs going back on a fly ball. By the time Mauer was playing there, the track was filled in. The hill still exists, along with the fence.

I have one of those fields also. Quigley Stadium (http://www.ballparkreviews.com/whaven/whaven.htm) Is an old field that has seen the likes of Roger Marris, Whitey Ford and Yogi Berra. It was once used as a Minor League Park for the West Haven Yankees (NY Yankee affiliate). The light stanchions are inside the park also. It is now used as a home field for Notre Dame High School, Home park for West Haven Twilight League and visiting AAU championships. Presently undergoing renovations.

Seeing some of the parks you deal with thisone isn't too bad, but you may notice that the 1st base foul line and the fence intersect at about 120' and then the fence moves in from there.

This is one of the BEST high school fields I have ever worked on. It is the varsity field for Elizabeth HS, in Elizabeth, NJ. It is a large urban school. The field is immaculate. It is built to professional standards and it is kept in perfect condition. I did a state championship game at this field two years ago. It has one odd peculiararity. As you can see it is in an congested urban area, so the field is force into a difficult space on a city block. Right field is very short, but the fence is 25 feet high. The weird part is the foul area down the left field line. The fence angles in to the foul line behind 3B, then it angles away from the line. If a fair ball goes down into that corner F9 might get to it but he can't see HP and maybe not even 3B!

Here's another one I don't care for. Luckily this is its last year they are moving to a new really nice complex.

The 90' diamond is on the top and the little kid diamond is on the bottom. There is no barrier b/t the two fields the little kids will grab live balls as the big kids come onto their field to play a ball. I'm really suprised that over the years a little kid playing left or center field has never been hit in the back of the head by a ball in flight from the big field.

Also during fall ball they turn the little kid field into a football field and there is a constant flow of people walking across the outfield to get to the football field rather than walking around using the sidewalk. I actually pray when that happens for one of these lazy bastards to catch one in the ear as they walk across the field. The league has instructed us to play with ithe idiots in the field because we wouldn't be able to get a game in otherwise.

Hurley HS in Hurley, VA. Backstop is 8 ft. behind home plate. Base paths are grass. RF line is about 210 , LF is 300. Has a creek that runs from center and down the RF line. Road runs up the LF line. No parking or facilities.

I can see how the CF part is the football field, But, Do they put a temporary fence across CF for baseball to make the demensions normal?

Kyle_Stevens

They do put up a temporary fence during baseball. However, it is a little over or right around 400 ft., close to the 30 yard line (closest to the baseball diamond). It still takes a man-child to hit one out, though.

I've shown my worst...here's the best.

Campanelli Stadium at Brockton High School, Brockton, MA.

Built on the grounds of the High School for the Brockton Rox Independent League team...I think they're in the Can AM League now.

Because the school is so big and the land was there...the Varsity team now plays their games on campus, the JV's go about 5 blocks away where the Varsity used to play.

They've got about 1800 students here. Beyond the RF wall is Marciano Football Stadium which seats about 12,000 or so.

ok cant get my two worst on any kind of photo that actually shows the field too far out for google

1. Field has no grass, none, is plowed out of alluvial outfall and decomposed granite, about 8 feet of elevation change from left field down to right field. Ball gets past an outfielder or hits a rock and takes a bounce it will roll to the fence and usually have some puncture vine stickers in it. Stickers if it goes to backstop too

2. Pretty field with a great view of mountain canyon about 6600 feet. Biggest problem is the lights that always seem to blow a breaker when used

I have worked one high school where the football field visiting bleachers take of all of the outfield until they get moved. I have work one high school where the lights are inside the fence. I have worked one high school where the soccer field takes of the outfield and there is a rising berm that is 8 feet high in left field.

All of this within a 15 mile radius of my home here in Ohio.

I checked this field with Google Earth. The elevation of the plate is 218 feet above sea level. The elevation of the parking lot at the top of the hill is 243 feet. Right field slopes up 25 feet!

The field is basically in the 'town'-square.

There is no outfield fence. There's a tree that hangs over third base. Light stands and scoreboard are in play.

Ground Rules:

Roads (or ditch in front of the roads, depending on how Nehawka feels about its pitcher and the visiting pitcher on a visiting day) are the outfield "fence". Anything that hits the road (or the ditch in front if they're playing that way) in the air is a home run, anything bounding is a double.

Lights are in play. If anything hits a light pole, the ball is live. But, the scoreboard..."it's way out there...we've never seen anyone hit it, but if someone does, give 'em a home run." (according to Nehawka coach).

Tree down third base (that hangs pretty much directly over 3B) can be dead or alive, depending on how the coaching staff feels that day.

The other best parts about this. In Legion season, the sun sets directly behind CF, so UIC, catcher, and batter can have 20 minutes or so of complete guess-work.

And, then, once it gets dark, the "fence" is probably a good 50 feet past the lights. And it's pitch black back there....so, you basically have to guess as to whether something (especially down the lines, where the distance is reasonable) rolled onto the street, or got it in the air. Often you can't even see the fielders to base your call off their reaction.

But, they always have lots of good food left at the concession stand after the games are over.

the best field i have wprked on. it is a high school/junior college/american legion park that rivals some minor league parks.

Like the license plate says "Oklahoma is Ok." I once spent 4 wonderbar months there. Who laid out Enid? That is the way all towns should look. You could lay a screen door over it.

This is easily the best ballpark that I have ever umpired in:

The U.S. Steel Yard: http://www.railcatsbaseball.com/photo.asp

It's the home of the Gary Southshore RailCats, located in Gary, IN. They play in the Northern League (Independent Minors), and they also play select HS games there.

Worst one I ever played on is here.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=pine+st+and+gorham+st+newmarket+ontario&sll=44.053529,-79.448447&sspn=0.013787,0.029011&ie=UTF8&ll=44.053409,-79.449348&spn=0.001723,0.003626&t=h&z=18

I am talking about the one with the straight fence. Down the lines it measures about 280 and about 140 (if that) in center. The CF can basically be used as a 5th infielder.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=talbot+park+toronto+ontario&ie=UTF8&ll=43.71101,-79.374649&spn=0.001733,0.003626&t=h&z=18

This park is one of the more historic parks in Toronto. The larger diamond has a rather large hill in left field with not one but two fences. There is a chain-link fence at the top of the hill adjecent to the sidewalk and there is a mesh net that is in play tied to the light poles that are about halfway up the hill.

The nicest stadium I have worked in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapidz_Stadium

and the nicest amature facility.
http://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&q=%22bond+park%22&ie=UTF8&ll=43.74627,-79.351496&spn=0.001732,0.003626&t=h&z=18

This park has five diamonds to cover every level of ball in Ontario, four of them have lights. Two batting cages, snack bar, two team dressing rooms and one umpires room all with working showers.

Here's one where the picture doesn't do the field justice:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Scot+Middle+School,+Coatesville,+pa&ie=UTF8&ll=39.985191,-75.806724&spn=0.000853,0.002406&t=h&z=19

In the outfield, there are light posts. Right field has a short fence, about 250ft with a playground behind it. If the ball doesn't careen off the light post, it usually finds the playground.

Best field I have worked recently: Minnetonka High School in suburban Minneapolis. All artificial turf, with the exception of the mound. The only time you need to brush the plate is when a few of the rubber granules that hold in the artificial turf fall onto the plate after someone slides home. They installed brown artificial turf arounf the plate.

A little over $3.6 million - for a high school field. Nicest non-professional field I have ever worked. Great place to hit and field, makes for crisp games.

Oh, and the football field is the same quality, they spent the rest of the $10 million on that...........

This is Alden-Hebron High school field. The baseball field is inside the track. The softball field is about 320 feet to left field. and yes they do play games at the same time on occasion.

I have been lucky enough to work at Miller Park in Milwaukee three times (twice with the roof open, once with it closed). They let high school teams go there and play as long as they sell so many tickets to a regular brewers game

one of the weirdest fields i have worked on. the school building in right center is in play. (think green monster)

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=tulsa+memorial+high+school+tulsa,+ok&sll=36.131723,-95.898349&sspn=0.001876,0.003562&ie=UTF8&ll=36.082779,-95.914561&spn=0.001877,0.003562&t=h&z=18

another weird one, the curvature in th right center fence is a HUGE hill that goes up about 20 ft in almost 20 ft. the best part of working here is the walking trail that goes by and the golf course. lots of scenery all game.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=tulsa+central+high+school+tulsa,+ok&sll=36.154336,-95.932558&sspn=0.001875,0.003562&ie=UTF8&ll=36.164843,-96.027777&spn=0.001875,0.003562&t=h&z=18

note the movable fence in right on this one. lots of places for ball to get thru.

Umpire's locker room was in the Civic Center beyond the left field wall...After one game, we had to change while the Steve Miller Band was jamming in concert. It was wild.

Here's a favorite of mine, Soldiers Field in Douglas, MA.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=east+douglas,+ma&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=52.107327,100.986328&ie=UTF8&ll=42.074152,-71.717066&spn=0.00301,0.006164&t=h&z=18

260' down the line in right (with a net above the wall), 410' to straightaway center.

The MLB Red Sox and Yankees played an exhibition game here during the pennant race in September, 1946. Can you imagine something like that happening in this day and age?

This one here:
http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox&q=9000+SW+Durham+Rd,+Portland,+OR+97224,+USA&ll=45.402134,-122.769969&spn=0.002072,0.003648&t=h&z=18

has the entire football field in play. About 240' RF corner, 410' or so to right-center and it has an "Infinity" sign (kind of an "8" layiong on it's side) in deep Left- center.

This one here:
http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox&q=jefferson+high+school&near=Portland,+OR&fb=1&cid=4993846655179725837&li=lmd&t=h&ll=45.559694,-122.671972&spn=0.001033,0.001824&z=19

is remarkable for the concrete pad right next to the foul line.

This is one of the more interesting fields we have in central NC, Holt-Moffitt Field in Lexington NC. It's home of Lexington HS baseball (who snapped a 70+ game losing streak this year) and the Lexington-Davidson American Legion team which is a strong AL program in this area. It's a former minor league park and it has a steep berm that spans from the left field corner all the way over to CF. Think Minute Maid Park but steeper.

http://maps.yahoo.com/#mvt=s&lat=35.816321&lon=-80.263726&zoom=19&q1=holt%20moffitt%20park%2C%20nc

The other park with a berm is McCrary Park in Asheboro, NC (home of Asheboro HS, Randolph Co. American Legion and the CPL's Asheboro Copperheads). It has a berm down the RF line starting from behind the 1st base dugout all the way down to the RF corner. The berm itself is in foul but live ball territory. There is an area behind the dugout where balls can enter and it is considered DBT. Note that it also has a covered grandstand.
