We never call them just plain "balls" because, well, the following are what comics call "asking for it":
"Anyone around here got any balls?"
"Has anyone seen my balls?"
"Coach, I only have two balls! How many do you have?" [Three, but don't tell anyone]
and my favourite grammatical oopsie:
"I don't have any balls!" [You're tellin me, blue!]
Honestly, they're called BASEballs for a reason!
