Had my first ejection in a long time a few days ago, and it was a sad experience.

R2 trying to score behind R3 on an previous overthrown play at home was dead out (F2 had the ball well before the slide started), but at the end of the slide R2 popped up into F2 and tried to either dislodge the ball or bowl F2 over to prevent a play on the BR, I'm not sure which. It wasn't a smart slide, nor was it a clean one.

Anyway, the contact was hard enough that I expected F2 to retaliate. Fortunately, he didn't. I still had an ejection on the contact, highlighted by the fact that the district has issued a special point of emphasis against verbal and physical confrontations during games.

To make matters worse, the player's team didn't have a substitute, so the game was called. Even worse, they were winning by 7 runs in the fifth inning.

I have been told by several people, including the president of the league (who saw the play) that it was a good ejection. Doesn't make it any easier, though, since the runner was out anyway and a fight didn't actually break out.

Hopefully, the player and his team will learn from the experience. Personally, I feel they think they got ripped off by an umpire.

They got ripped off by their runner, not you.

You did everything right, Ken. If they want to get upset with anyone, they need to take a long look at the runner that was stupid enough to do what he did. There is nothing for you to feel bad about.

A similar situation arises where you dump a Manager, only to have the opposing Manager gleefully appear and "appeal" to you under local league rules that, as you have just dumped the only "certified" adult from the other team, the game is immediately forfeit because all teams are required to have at least one "certified" coach on the bench at all times.

None of which occurred to you when you dumped said Manager.

Ugh.

(and although Ken shouldn't feel badly for how things turned out in his sitch, he did - as would I and most of the rest of us. Sometimes it just sucks to be the umpire.)

Sometimes it just sucks to be the umpire.

Only when you don't know what you are doing.

Well, Oz is right, isn't he? When we screw up, umpiring sucks. So we try to do that as rarely as possible through continuous improvement.
