Has anyone else had problems with the New Balance Plate shoe's seams coming undone where the protective tongue is sewn into the shoe above the toe?

I noticed it the other day after only one season of use.

Love the feel and comfort of the shoe, but would like to get more than one year of use out of plate shoes.

Contact who ever you bought them from (Honigs, GD, etc.) they can exchange them for you.

It seems to be a common problem:

I've had mine for two seasons with no problems. I am very pleased with them, although they are a bit harder to get on.

there was a problem with the first "model" of the shoe, NB then redesigned the area where the tearing occured, basically added some stitching to the area, it made the met flap a little stiffer, but it worked for me, i love mine.

The first edition of this shoe had two rivets which held the metatarsal guard on. I bought the first edition late in the season two years ago. Only had a couple of games before my back blew out (surgery followed). This past season, two games in - one rivet on one of the shoes let go. Then, within a week - a rivet on the other shoe let go. Fortunately, New Balance were great. The allowed me to do my own repair - and because they could not replace them (remember, I am in Canada and not a big call up here for these shoes) - they refunded me my full purchase price. I understand they now have three rivets holding the metatarsal guard to the shoe - and fewer/no? problems. I am about to get another pair now the bugs 'seem' to have been worked out.

Happened to me, too - first season.

Contacted NB directly, they replaced them without a fuss.

I can see where this could be an issue, especially with someone who has a high instep. I can usually wear a 9 1/2 EE pretty easily. Had to go to a 10 on this shoe, and I STILL have to fight a bit to get them on. I'll put up the fight though, because these are the best plate shoes I've worn, period!

I wore a pair for first time tonight, and now I know what y'all are talking about. Niiiiiiiiiiice.

I still like the look of my GD patent leather shoes, but just save those for big games. The NB are my new everyday shoe. I'll keep an eye on the rivets.

if you bought a new pair then you dont have to worry any more. NB had an issue with the first run of these shoes and have since corrected the problem.

I hope so... mine were purchased at the beginning of the year, and earlier this week I had to send them back for replacement.

NB Web Express was great about it - I didn't buy them through NBWE, but rather locally through a retailer that doesn't carry them anymore.

NBWE took them in return anyway. Hopefully they'll be a new pair arriving next week, as I'll be in need of them.

Just received my new (replacement) MU450's from New Balance Web Express.

For all the talk of a 3rd rivet and heavier stitching, these look remarkably similar to the ones I'd sent back.

2 rivets.

Light stitching holding the metatarsal plate near the toe.

Sure is good to have them again, though. I wore them around the house for about an hour - they're ready for my next game already.

I guess we'll see how these ones hold up.

I'm probably about 20 plates, give or take, into my pair and noticed some time ago that the leather came loose from around one of the rivets. I didn't think anything of it at first, but now that others have mentioned it and I recall that I dropped well over $100 for them, I think I want some justice!

They are wicked comfortable, however.

I'd contact NB Web Express if I were you - they were very good about providing a replacement pair (had them back in about a week) - in spite of the fact that I didn't buy them via NBWE.

The problem with mine wasn't the rivets - it was the stiching that holds the plate it started fraying after maybe 10 games or so.

My worry now is that the replacement pair look like the same thing I had before... so, we'll see...

I have already sent back a pair of New Balance base shoes and now I am in the process of sending back my NB Plate shoes. One of the shoes is splitting in three places and the protective tongue is almost severed. I bought both pair from Honigs. It took almost three weeks to receive my new pair of base shoes. The shoes are comfortable, but brand new shoes should last more than a single season.
