I'M HOPEING TO GET BACK INTO OFFICIATING BASEBALL NEXT YEAR, BUT IT'S BEEN A VERY LONG TIME (4-5 YEARS) SINCE I HAVE DONE ANY KIND OF RUNNING AT ALL. WELL YESTERDAY MY WIFE WENT WITH ME TO OUR LOCAL BALL FIELD AND I RAN (JOGGED) FROM HOME PLATE TO 3RD BASE, TO 2ND BASE, TO 1ST BASE AND SO ON. BOY DID I NOT ONLY FEEL AWKWARD :roll: , BUT I FELT TOTALLY OFF BALANCE, BUT I GUESS THAT WAS TO BE EXPECTED 8O .

I WAS WONDERING WHAT KIND OF DAILY WORKOUTS COULD I DO TO TRY AND GET BACK INTO OFFICIATING SHAPE FOR NEXT YEAR AS FAR AS THE AMOUNT OF RUNNING GOES THAT WE NEED TO DO DURING ANY GIVEN GAME. ANY IDEAS WOULD REALLY HELP. BY THE WAY I AM IN PRETTY GOOD SHAPE FOR 57 YEARS OLD, JUST NEVER HAVE DONE MUCH RUNNING SINCE MY 12 YEARS OF PLAYING RUGBY ENDED MANY MOONS AGO.

Maybe you felt awkward because you didn't realize you were running the base BACKWARDS, fool!

If you are in good shape for a 57 y/o you should have no problem doing LL games (12u) which is where you should start out so you could get your umpie instincts back. The exercise you get in those first games will help you get back into a mid-season form.

Welcome back, WC...Far be it for me to claim any sort of physical training expertise, but whatever you do make sure that you include plenty of stretching exercises before and after any activity!!

some advice I received that I had never thought of was after getting yourself into decent shape, prior to spring games, was to put your plate gear on and do a little running with that on. sprints since that is what we do most of.

If you want to drastically improve your cardio before you get out and do a lot of running try DDR. (http://www.ddrgame.com/?gclid=CI2BlMSPxo0CFThhIgodLHmmHw) I was coerced into trying it at a fun fair by my youngest son this past Spring and it kicked my butt!

Aside from typical cardio work, I think it's extremely important to work your quads. I'll never forget the first couple of years I umpired, after the season opener on a Saturday, how hard it was to walk the next day. Needless to say, I hadn't done any squatting exercises, or leg extension exercises.

I'd say a good cardio workout coupled with some leg stretches and quad extensions/squat presses will help you get your legs back. As for instinct- the only way to get that back is through experience. Like Richard said, LL is a great place to start.

wcravp...I just saw your post. One of the best things I ever did to get into shape was to attend some workout classes at the gym I belong to. They offer a series of four different classes. I have been using two of them for the last two years and they have helped me tremendously. The two classes I took were "Power" and "Cycling". Both classes are about an hour..... a short warm-up, the class and then stretching and cool down. The instructirs are great and they let you go at your own pace, but motivate for to step up. The Power class is weight lifting done with music, but its lighter weights done with more repetitions. I have continued to do them now for 3 years and they have really helped me behind the plate. Im 51 and with some bad knees and it sure helps.
