FED game. I am PU. on 2-2 count batter takes a BENDER on the inside corner, I RING him up.

Batter rolls eyes and as he's trotting back to his dugout he shouts, "INSIDE!" loud enough for both DUGOUTS and 1 set of stands to hear him...his BACK is to me as he is doing this.

EJECT?

Why or why not?

Probably not. But I would stare at him for a while to see if he gives an encore until he sits down. Sometime guys who do that will do more if they don'r get ant reaction from you. So kee an eye on him for 20 or 30 seconds and see if he makes any other comments or gestures to you from the bench. If he does that from the bench you now have a better case to eject.

"Coach, he shouted "Inside!" as he went beck to the bench. I let that go (being the great guy I am) because I know guys will 'vent' some times. However, when he got back to the bench he couldn't let it go. I saw what he did (if he gestures at you), or I heard what he said (if he shouts at you from the bench) when he got back to the bench. That's arguing ball & strikes, so he done."

Richard,
If you're going to stare him down for 20 to 30 seconds, why don't you just throw him out to begin with. I find this childish, but maybe I'm wrong. I would like to hear other opinions about this technique. I find that the batter yelling INSIDE to be arguing balls and strikes, so waiting for him to go back to the dugout to argue balls and strikes is cheap. But I don't know, if it works, it works.

Ahhh, yes, the old stink eye. This techinque is usually used in conjunction with a stern "that's enough." It's a good game management technique to try keeping a player in the game while at the same time letting him know he's now on a very short leash.

Is this the only thing I've heard from him? I'd let it go, wave him away with a "dismissal" gesture, and go back to work. Tossing him for this is only going to make things worse.

Wellllll WOULDNT work in THIS case cuz the player was walking AWAY from ME (to his dugout) at the TIME. COULDNT SEE any staring on MY part.

Don't do that -- dismissive wave is pretty disrespectful. If a player gave you a wave like that after you called him out, or if a coach did that to you in an argument, you'd toss him for showing you up.

Don't show the players (or coaches) up either.

I think the stare works -- if any of OP's coaches or teammates are on the ball, they'll stop batter from doing anything else when he gets to the dugout.

Stare works depending on your stature as an Umpire.

Juniors District Championship: I had a Coach wave across his chest (assume he did not like my strike zone at the letters).

I just looked at my chest, dusted off the imaginary dirt there and said thanks Coach, didn't know I had some dirt up there.

After a few chuckles, he shut up for the remainder of the game.

Some/Most umpires will eject at similar gestures and to be sure, I have done so in the past. I was giving the little cheese-nibbler an opportunity to shut up and stay in the game. Some might say I was baiting him but at least it was fun.

Not with that player it won't.

If he's walking away and that's all that's been said, let him go. If the players are crying or starting to cry because they're losing, then give them the "That's enough." Then eject.

Remember if you stare a dog in the eye, the dog sees it as a sign of aggression.

True, but when the dogs growls, I'm gonna kick him in the ass to show who's really in control...

As several have already shared, the "stare" technique works. Especially if you have good field presence and game control. JB

I would say no because at this level in HS ball it is just flack you hear and should be ignored unless the batter would blatently argue strikes or show you up. Also would you eject a coach from the dugout that randomly said imside? It would be an unrealistic action. Gettig flack is part of umpiring unfortunately and unless you felt he was showing you up, then get over it andmove on.

I will do like Richard on the first batter. On anything else, I will talk to the coach. After that I start tossing till it stops or we go home.

Im of the mind to do the stare and the "thats enough" or "knock it off". I'm waiting for a reply of NO or WHATEVER. That would be enough for me. If he turns around and comes back thats enough for me... basicly this dude is in a world of trouble unless he keeps his trap shut for the next two hrs.

Both of these instances are showing the umpire up.

When I stare down dogs they eventually close their eyes and/or turn their heads away in a defeated manner. I love a good dog stare down.

I personally don't like to use stare down I usually just employ a firm That's enough and it does the trick.
