I was doing a High School Summer League Triple Header today and I was the BU for the second game (did the plate the 1st and 3rd games). Now I will be the first to admit that my partner's strikezone was very erractic, but he is only in his first year of umpiring, so I gave him the benefit of the doubt. He was trying his best, as well as being erratic for both teams. We were able to get to the top of the 5th inning before the visiting coach had enough of my partners strikezone. The coach called time and my partner granted it. Now to me, they didn't look like they were really arguing or anything, in fact, I couldn't even hear what they were saying. I was easing towards them anyway because of my partner being as inexperienced as he was. I didn't want things to get out of hand all of a sudden and not be able to get there in time to back him up. Well as I was slowly easing closer, the coach sneezed loudly. Without hesitation, my partner dumped him.
Well this didn't go over well with the coach and he let my partner have it with both barrels. I was able to get in between the both of them before anything got too out of hand. I was able to get the coach off the field as he was yelling obsenities at the top of his lungs and we were able to finish the inning. After the second game was over, we went back into the little changing shack (that's what I'll call it because that's what it looked like....at least it had an AC), I asked him why he tossed the guy, and he told me that the coach sneezed directly in his face on purpose. I swear that I had one hell of a laugh attack in that changing shack. To hear the coach tell my partner, "Hey....I said excuse me blue. So what's your problem?" was something straight out of a comedy routine.
Like I told my partner....if I thought that the coach sneezed on me on purpose, then I would have dumped him too. The thing is that I don't think that the coach can make himself sneeze at will, so maybe he didn't do it on purpose. Of course he could have felt the sneeze coming on, and decided to aim it towards my partner. You never know what these rats are thinking.
