Here's the situation, I was working an 11U USSSA tournament this past weekend. I really don't like working this but it's good money, anyway. . .
I was a fill in on one field until my games started on another field b/c of a rain delay. I was working the field and the PU was loud, arrogant and stupid. he was wearing gray dress pants and a navy blue sweatshirt, his hat was on backwards and the only equipment he had on behind the plate was a mask!!! Coach calls timeout to talk to his pitcher so the PU takes out his cell phone and makes a phone call, we have to wait on him to complete his call to get the game started!!!! We got through that game ok and it was time for me to rotate off, this next game is where all the action was. I was simply a spectator for this game but I saw something I hope I never see again.

The PU from the previous game remained the PU for this game, I guess he didn't want to change out of his equipment, oh wait, he still wasn't wearing any!!!! There was a balk called and some of the fans started yelling at the BU. So the PU approaches the fans and tells them to shut their mouths or he would eject them AND the head coach. All is well for a little while until there was a steal attempt at third base, the BU never moved from B position and made a bad call. The kid was out be 3 steps and he called him safe. I'm not sure why this happened but it did. The PU yells at the BU, yelled LOUD, "you better get some help on that call!!!!" The BU said "I don't need any help", so then the fans started yelling at the BU. The fan that got ejected said to the BU something like, "If you don't know you need help, you don't need to be out there". Then the PU comes approaches that fan and said, "I know one thing, you got to go". The fan said "I wasn't talking to you", then the PU pulls out his CELL PHONE and says "you got 30 seconds to leave or I'm gonna forfeit this ballgame". Anyway, the fan left and as he was walking away, the PU looked at the other teams fans and called the guy a "DAMN REDNECK"!!!!!

After I picked up my jaw from the ground, I went and worked 3 quiet games. Just thought I'd share this with you guys so you can have a laugh too. I was actually more embarrassed than anything.

If those are the kind guys you have to work with, the money must been really good if you keep going back.

This was the first time I called at this tournament, It will also be the last. The partner I worked with was actually really good, I was just a fill in on this other field for two games. I talked with the tournament director after all of this and he said he was desperate for umpires, he forgot to schedule umpires for the tournament. They always forget about the umpires!!! I just happen to be free for the weekend and able to help him out. I think he learned his lesson about scheduling though!!!!

I can't help but laugh because it sounds like the PU was the damn redneck. I hope that the only reason this guy gets hired is because of the last minute scheduling.

You're right J. That's what was so funny, the PU maybe had 2 teeth in his whole head and he's calling someone else a redneck!!!! He is from Mississippi by the way, backwoods, Mississippi. The really sad part is, and I watched about 3 of his games, he had a VERY consistent strike zone!!!! He was actually a good (i use that relative to his apperance and demeanor) umpire when it came to balls/strikes, safe/out, fair foul!!!!!!

C'mon, guys! I saw this very tourney. I thought the BU in questions was FANTASTIC! I talked to him a lot, and he explained to me about telling head coaches how they were on a "bubble", and anything that they might do could burst the bubble, then they would be ejected. He explained how the backwards cap did two things- it made it easy to take off a mask, and protected the back of your neck from sunburn. AND, I'll have you know, he had FOUR teeth- three uppers and one lower (but they were stained from the chewing tobacco).

Like I say, I talked to him a lot, and got a lot of advice from him. He said his name was Lance....
