Took all of last year off from umppiring to get my health in order. From January 1st, 2004 to yesterday I've now lost 142 lbs!
Been nervous about the start of the season tonight & was just trying my gear on. WOW! Some of it was WAY to big! Was standing looking at myself in the mirror & I heard those words that Dennis Quaid said in "The Rookie": "Hey Guys... You know what we get to do tonight? We get to play baseball!"
6:00 p.m. tonight I have the honor of starting the season with those immortal words: "PLAY BALL!" I can hardly wait!
BIG!

Not so big...blueump. Congratulations. Maybe you should change your handle to fit your new form.
I lost a mere 50 pounds 3 years ago. The first time you "go out" on a fly to the outfiled and you're not sucking wind you realize what difference the wieght loss makes. I hope you bought all new clothes. Even your shoes might not fit.

Thanks Richard!
Went from 5XL Tall to 3x Tall Shirt; 58/60 Slacks to 48 Slacks; & 15 4E down to 14 2E Shoes! Even lost 2 sizes off of my hat!
Hope to loose another 50 pounds by end of summer.
Just one problem though... Pitchers used to LOVE having a HUGE backstop right behind their catcher when they threw wild! OUCH!
Hehehe!
Big!

If i may offer my expertise (my screen name may be "the largeone," but it's not b/c of being overweight)... i had a post in another thread that can help you. So let me reiterate:
I firmly believe the key to weight loss is SWEAT... that's right, EXERCISE.
For some people, diets work wonders. For some, the results will not be as good. In the latter situations, there should be some type of cardio work to help with the weight loss process. My favorite is the most simple: jog. Jog until it hurts. Then go out again in a day or two and jog until it hurts (push yourself to do better - either more distance, or keep the same distance, but run it faster). Keep doing this and in no time your cardio will be great and your weight will drop.
I'll give you some tips right from my college football workout book (Note: this MAY apply to just athletes, but it won't hurt to give it a shot)
1) You must take in fewer calories than you burn off
2) You may safely lose 1-2 lbs per week - any more and you are losing muscle along with the fat
3) For each pound to lose you must eliminate 3500 calories. This should be accomplished through a combination of diet and exercise.
4) Dieting alone is not a good method for losing weight. Cutting your caloric intake below 2500 calories per day will not give you the energy/fuel needed for training/competition, thus your performance will suffer negatively.
5) Losing weight through exercise alone calls for a tremendous increase in activity level
6) The fastest, easiest and best way to lose weight is through a combination of diet and exercise. If you consume 500 less calories and exercise (burn off) 500 more calories, you take off an additional 1000 calories per day. At this rate you can lose 2 pounds in 1 week.
I hope this gives you some ideas! But remember, this is probably going to be a gradual process if you are a large man. Quick weight loss is very unhealthy. Pills and such are advertised to give you quick weight loss, but they have many side effects. The old fashioned way is the best... SWEAT. It's getting warmer now, so do things outside during the hottest parts of the day (like mow the lawn at 3:00 pm). You will sweat your tail off and probably lose lots of water weight.
Remember, weight loss is a marathon, not a sprint.
PS - if you want to lose weight, it takes total commitment. You can't be lazy and lose weight.... just won't happen. It's an every day thing until you get to your ideal weight. The best way to do it is with a buddy! Preferrably one who is allready in top physical condition so you can push yourself to keep pace with them and that person can motivate you when you are slacking.
I have to report to camp in August at 15 lbs less than what i'm at right now, so i'm with all of you!

Well Large I am kind of large! LOL I go 6,1 at 270 most people think I weigh somewhere in the 230 range. I have a job that is very NON strenous! haha Watching boilers work isn't work it's a living.
My trouble is that
1. I enjoy food to much.
2. A half hour on the bike at home isn't enough exercise anymore.
3. With four kids, wife, umpiring and a job working all three shifts not much free time.
4. I ENJOY FOOD TO MUCH :!:
5. Extreme case of no will power.
6. To much time on ABUA forum site.
7. Will sell wife and one child for any miracle cures.LOL
Man I needed that feels good to laugh.

PABlue, i hear ya on #1 and #4!
Really, all you need is a half hour to an hour a day.
Instead of doing the bike, try and jog. Doing things on a machine never really give you the feel of doing it in real life since something is always compensated.
Start low- like a half mile. Find a track at a near by high school (an indoor track would be much better since you are in the colder part of PA. Warm weather is coming soon, so don't have to worry about warmth for too long). 1 lap around the track is a quarter mile. If you don't have access to a track, drive your jogging path around your neighborhood in your car and use your odometer to figure out how long a half mile is.
Run that half mile as fast as you can. Pace yourself, but don't loaf. Wear a watch and get your time for your half mile. Based on that, set a goal for yourself to work up to. My personal best was 2 miles in 15:40 min (slightly under 2 min a lap). Do this at least 3-4 days a week, or more if possible.
If you're pressed for time, i always find night runs to be pretty good since the sun is not out and it isn't very hot-- you could do this after one of your games.
As for your food cravings- i found that eating just your 3 meals per day (of whatever) is good. Don't stuff yourself. If you get hungry for a snack, grab a gatorade or a drink. You'll lose a good amount of weight by just doing that for a "diet."
But your #5 is going to be your greatest barrier. It all depends on how bad you want to lose the weight. Lazyness gets to us all, but i found out that deciding to actually GO work out is half the battle. Once you get there, put out an effort. You'll feel much better about yourself and you'll look good too.
If i can be of any more help, let me know
big blue, i sold all my size 50 plate and base pant but have too many size 48 both base and plate if you are interested, to lose weight will power has a lot to do with it eating much smaller sizes of food helps a lot of fruit is great as well but eating more meals a day keeps the tummy burning fat. is also good , going to gym helps as well, I have lost the same as you though not in shoe or hat size but think of it as loosing a person off your frame, I know the 145 lbs i lost is just that. Hell i bought size 42 from honig's and now I am wearing size 40's keep the faith brother.
send me a pvt. msg and i will get the details from you and congrads again

Hey Guys...I know this thread is a little old, but I'm happy to announce that I'm down 23 lbs. since April 15th. Wanna know my secret???
Get yourself a job in the Greens Dept. at your local golf course!!! I'm on the staff up here at Westmount Golf & Country Club, a private club and start work at 6:00 a.m. Usually, we are walking an estimated 4 - 7 kms. (that would be 2.5 - 4.5 miles) per day, either cutting greens with a heavy, self propelled mower (more like being dragged behind due to the speed of the engine...ha..ha) or raking bunkers, stumping trees, cleaning out drains...the list goes on. It's hard slugging in the heat, but then you go out at night, put the umpiring gear on and do your game(s). I've now reached my old playing weight when I was 25 and playing Sr. Intercounty Ball (leg speed hasn't changed, can still keep up with the kids!!!).
With the sweat it generates, the pounds melt away!!! Who needs a fat farm or all those Daisy Fuentes, Winsor Pilates Videos...(well maybe I'll keep Daisy and get rid of those Pilates Videos...ha  don't mention that to my wife please).[/u]

The proper work out and diet should do the trick. Don't worry, you are more than likely still growing. However, you should always continue with a good exercise program.

I have heard that people are at their maximum for muscle size when they are 40 years old. Not sure if this is true or not.

I highly recommend getting the book "The Testosterone Advantage Plan".
I have lost 185 lbs and have gained muscle.
This book has three types of diets with a very good workout plan. 1 diet to loose weight. 1 diet to maintain weight. 1 diet to gain weight in muscle.

I'm always experimenting with different diets and workout plans. But I believe that the key factor to getting in shape is how hard you work. My philosophy is that it doesn't really matter what you do so long as you go all out. I'm not sure if this is true or not, but does a specific workout plan and diet make a huge difference in the gains one can make?

If your specific workout and dieting plan consists of pounding beers and eating cheeseburgers while you walk your dog to the corner and back, then I'd say that would make a huge difference over a real plan.

I think that I could stand to lose a pound or 50. I lost 30 last year, and hopefully I can do at least that again.
