I am a 57 year old rookie umpire this season. I was working just my second high school game yesterday. I was the base umpire in a two man crew. In the top of the 2nd inning, from the A slot, on a line drive base hit to left field, I started my bust into the infield grass to watch the tag at first and pivot. With my first step, I felt a strange sensation in my lower left leg. The rest of the game, the best I could do was hobble around the field. I was able to complete the game, but without the usual hustle. The walk to my car after the game was painful. The pain during the night caused me to awake often. Overnight, my calf muscle has become hard, tight and swollen. I can barely walk, as each step is very painful. Any suggestions as to what this might be, how to deal with it, and what the recovery period may be? Fortunately, the game I was to work today has been rained out. My next scheduled game (behind the plate) is a week from today. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks! :(

Sounds like you strained a calf muscle! The best treatment short of seeing a doctor is good old R.I.C.E. Rest, Ice (20 minutes/hour), Compression (Ace wrap) and Elevate for the first 24 hours. This should reduce the swelling.

After the first 24 hours you can replace the ice with heat to promote increased blood flow.

And don't forget either "Vitamin" I or M... Ibuprofen or Motrin!!!

To prevent further potential problems warm up prior to the game and do some stretching!
