Look at the "normal" positions.

Since you posted here....for small diamond see attachment. I usually am a little further back near edge of grass.

On a 60' field, my 'B' & 'C' positions are completely off the infield dirt; I'm right on the edge of the grass. Of course, the only 60' games I do are LL (& these are rare for me anymore) which means you need to be in a position to call infractions of 7.13. If you're on the dirt, your view of that is much worse.
If you're working 60' open bases, you might want to consider putting your heels on the inside of the infield dirt (& you might want to consider wearing a cup as BU, too!)

You will get slightly different answers depending who talk to. I do both LL and HS Softball. The LL ideal is about what dragon will tell you for B & C positions.
In softball, we are told A should be up the line, in foul territory about 20' behind first. B should be behind F4 by about 3 feet, but if the player wants to start out deep, you can be in front of them., but usually stay on the 1st base side of F4.
C, would depend upon if you have an R3 or not. If you have R3, you want to be closer to 3rd for pickoffs (and they do it often), so setup on the 3rd base side of F6, again 2-3 ft behind F6. if only R2, then on the second base side.
Depth can be a problem, as some F4/F6 will play really deep and push you back. If they do, it is acceptable to move in front of them. It is recommended that you let the fielder know that you are. I have had a SS play deep on the grassline and playing behind her literally would take me out of the play, and a bad angle on a pickoff.
As far as being on the grass, careful with that one. Some fields, that is close to the infield.. other fields, that will be way out there and you will be removed from the play before it starts. (even more so on fields that double as 50/70 fields.)
Again, I normally treat LL (smallball) like I was doing HS softball. It is good practice for me for later in the year when I will be graded on performance.

With just R3, I've been using a different spot on the field this year. It's an extension of third to second baseline, about ten feet beyond second.
It affords a really good look down the barrel of a throw back to third from the catcher, plus puts you a whole lot closer to the next logical play by the infielders, which is at first. My positioning is just behind the line drawn between F4 and F6 (gotta be behind the infielders).
Try it fellas, and report back.

In ALL positions, make sure you are at least a FULL STEP BEHIND the fielder nearest you. That way, IF you are hit with a batted ball, there is no umpire inteference.
