Not that it matters as an umpire, but a situation during the past week and a follow up discussion brought this question up.
It is understood that a run cannot be charged as an earned run to a pitcher if it is the result of an error. Why would it not be charged to the pitcher if the error was committed by the pitcher? (Maybe this is addressed in some document I haven't found yet)

It doesn't matter who the error was made by. The run is still an unearned run. How does the pitcher making the error change the status of the run?
E.R.A. is a measure of pitching effectiveness. It attempts to remove the effect that bad defensive plays have on a pitcher's performance. Thus, fielding gaffes by any fielder (including the pitcher) should not affect it.

What about if the runner who scores gets on base due to swinging at a wild pitch that gets by the catcher and he fails to throw him out?

Wild pitch= Earned
Passed Ball= Unearned

I've said this in passing for years. If the pitcher makes an error it's still his run the way I see it. I see your point about measuring pitching effectiveness, but at the end of the day, if you are the reason the guy is on base then that run should be charged to you IMO.

So should F4 get runs charged to him due to his errors? What if a pitcher is pulled with runners on and is moved and is now playing 2B?
If he makes an error then, does he get the earned run?
Come on man.

No if F4 makes an error then he should be charged with an error which is obviously unearned. The pitcher did everything right, so the offense didn't earn the run off the pitcher, so it shouldn't have an impact on his earned run average. If the pitcher is moved to 2B after the error, he should be accountable for the runners that are on as a result of his error. Just my opinion. Obviously, the powers that be don't agree with me, but I just think we should hold pitcher's accountable for every run that is earned because of their actions.
