Had this happen today in HS playoff game. Total FUBAR but luckily had no effect on outcome of game. Looked like sh**t.

R2, batter bunts and slides head first into firts base throw in the dirt and F3 cant handle it. I called BR safe. R2 stops at third. Now BR stands up to dust himself off not standing on base and hands batting gloves to coach and F3 tags him so I bang him out.

this all happened quickly so it was not like a long puase but long enough for me to think it was a seperate play. I also start thinkning this is a tag play judgement call. OHC says this is a rule issue not a judgement call and asks me if I can get help. I conferred with my partners and we decide to overturn the out call. DHC coach is pissed.

Afterward, DHC said we made the right call but was pissed because it took so long to decide. (It would have been the third out)

Anyhow, is there any situation were the BR would be out for being tagged off the bag after sliding safely into first base?

p.s. - runners didnt score so the call didnt have an effect on the outcome of the game which ends with DHC team's winning.

There was NO basis for overturning the call. It was no longer an overrun/overslide situation if it ever was one in the first place.

How did a crew that would think there was an overturn basis get assigned to a playoff game?

So are you saying that being off first base on a slide is different then over runnig first base and bring off first on te way bck to the base?

Did he slide passed the base? Where was he standing?

He wasn't in "overrun" - he was standing next to the base dusting himself off and tsaking his batting gloves off.

The slide in to first base is a legal play. The batter runner was called safe then without requesting time to be granted by the umpire he was called out for being off the bag. Batter-runner out. Correct call

You kicked the call on this one. I have called out runners at 1B in exactly the same situation several times. Got a few arguments but a quick explanation quickly quashed it. "Jerry, he did not overrun or over slide the base. He stood up on the base and then stepped off. Nobody asked for time. He's out."

I have only made this out call when F3 has the ball right there and is looking at the BR waiting for him to step off the base. If the BR steps off without even looking at me or asking for time and he is tagged he's out. When BRs think that they can just step off the base with impunity that's when I get them. On the other hand, when the BR slides into the base and stays in contact with the base because he sees F3 has the ball, and the BR waits for F3 to throw the ball back to F1, and if then the BR steps off, even if he doesn't ask for time, I will call time for him. I do this because the BR's action showed be he realizes he can be called out if he steps off the bag and F3 tags him. I don't want a silly situation to start up with F3 calling for the ball to be thrown back to 1B to try and tag him then.
