While watching a softball game this past weekend. I saw an umpire call "STRIKE " on a check swing. The inexperienced OC asked the inexperienced PU to appeal to his BU which he did. The base ump agreed with the call. Maybe just to save the PU from making a big mistake. Several fans got on the BU for agreeing with the PU. I know you can't appeal a called strike. But later on I went home and checked the ASA rule book and there is absolutely nothing in the book about not appealing a called strike.

I made that mistake once - I appealed what I called a check swing strike on a 3-2 count. It was my third or fourth game behind the plate, and my more experienced partner reversed my call. Needless to say the DM was real happy with me...

I guess my partner figured if I was dumb enough to ask, he'd throw me under the bus...

I had a coach try to get me to check with my partner on a check swing where I called a strike... My partner at the time still laughs about it..

"He did not go, check with your partner blue"
"Doesn't matter coach"
"What do you mean it does not matter?"
"I didn't call the strike on the swing."
"Ah, oh... sorry blue..." Coach looked like he shrunk to about half size.

Gotta love the rookie LL coaches... later between innings, I explained that by rule, a strike cannot be appealed... though, by asking me to appeal, could be construed as arguing balls/strikes....
