I hear what you are saying bt. I guess for me I have always gravitated to the HSM because I was a catcher when I played, and it never has felt right wearing a traditional mask over a hat.

I used my Wilson for the second time today in 95 degree heat and was amazed at how much less I sweated today than before with my old bucket. The vents work extremely well, and the weight, or lack thereof, is awesome. I did a double today and sweat more when I did the bases with my hat on than I did behind the plate wearing the bucket. This mask is worth every penny, IMO.

I too used to catch but it was before Dave (I think that was his name) O'Brien was the catcher for the blue jays and introduced the HSM to the world. So I always used the traditional style mask and skull cap as a catcher and it just transitioned to my umpire work.

I will definately check it out.

Thanks

No problem, guys. I am getting ready for state that starts tomorrow. I will be working 17 games in the next 4 days. I imagine 8-10 will be behind the dish in 100 degree heat. This will definitely put the Shock the the test. I will let you know how it holds up.

Shocked Is there a shortage of umpires in your area or what?!?

Look forward to the review(s) of the Shock.

Thanks,

Thanks,

Being an assigner for one of the Babe Ruth organizations out here, I don't know if I would say there is a shortage of umpires, per se. There is, however, a shortage of quality umpires. As far as the amount of games I am doing, I have always done right by the assigner who is overseeing this tournament, and I also have state and regional experience, so he pretty much gave me first crack at what I wanted. I really enjoy working tournaments, and it's a lot of money for just a few days of work. I am working the small diamonds for this tourney, so the games are only 6 innings, and I alternate from plate to bases each game. Throw in the 10 run run rule after 3.5/4 innings, and it's a piece of cake. The games average anywhere from 1 hr 15 minutes to an hour and a half. I will end up making $680.00 in 3 and a half days, so for me, it's a great deal.

Something you might want to try under your helmet, if you can't wear your hat under it, is a skull cap. Under Armor and Nike make them.

Blue,

Im a traditional mask kind of guy. Always have been and most likely always will. However I remember seeing the Wilson shock helmet at a local sporting goods store here in LA and liked what I saw. Tried it on and liked how it felt. Might have to see if one of my partners have it next year and give it a try. I tried the Easton once and liked the view but didnt like how it felt in my hands (it lasted only about 2 or 3 innings with me). Who knows I might give it a trade and see how the other half lives. And hell, I keep seeing a bunch of MLB guys wearing it so it cant be all bad.

At our rules meeting in April, they talked that the helmet is going to be required.

I don't believe skull caps would be allowed for umpires. I don't have my FED book with me since the season is over, but I believe (and I'm sure Tim C. or someone else will correct me if I'm wrong) there is a rule that skull caps and bandannas are not allowed for players. Therefore I don't see how an umpire could wear them.

Man, I don't care if skull caps are banned or required. You look like a dork with it on.

Look, sorry you're bald, but a skull cap, or beanie for that matter, looks wrong. If you can get a normal looking hat underneath the helmet, good on ya. If not, get a haircut, or go Telly Savalas. Just don't do this.....BROTHER!
