Currently wearing the Diamond iX3 HSM and am considering upgrading in quality - interested in the All Star MVP2200SL. Anybody wearing this/have opinions on it (or others)?
Thanks. |

Just switched from the diamond Edge to the 2200SL. SL is better in every respect (fit, pads, weight, vis) except I could wear a 4-stitch hat under the diamond and cannot with the 2200SL |

| I just switched from the Diamond Edge to the Wilson Shock Titanium. It comes with a hefty price tag, but absolutely worth every penny and then some. |

| I think I've narrowed it down to either the Wilson Shock with the steel cage or one of the All Stars. (Either the 2200SL or the one right below it) Anyone have any comparisons? |

The one below it is the 2200SP!
I had that one for two + seasons, sold it to a fellow DCUA umpire, moved to the 2200SL from www.wasupply.com and am finishing my 2nd year with that!
The SL is a bit ligther...not alarmingly so, and I really like using it...all told I'm 5 seasons in the All Star Helmets!
I removed the padding for cleaning and never put the screws back through them...just velcroed the living hell out of it...and it's a lot easier to remove them and put them back for cleaning purposes!
Good luck!

| I had tried on the Wilson Shock FX but decided to order the 2200SL. I'm glad I did. The All Star fits better, looks better, and is cheaper. The Shock isn't bad, but I couldn't get over how goofy the cage on it looks. |

It sounded like you were going on looks and price, with providing optimum protection to your face, head and neck somewhere down the list.
Ump 32 has it right. It's easily the best helmet for protection, comfort, visibility and light weight. Used an All-Star for years catching the pitchers. No comparison with the Wilson, except that it may look cooler, I guess. Pry open the spring-loaded wallet, pull out an extra 80 and get a Shock FX titanium, for those of you who haven't made the purchase yet. Also, don't blow it and get the catcher's model with the steel cage ... go for the one with the titanium cage. _________________ "I may not always be right, but I'm never wrong." |

So according to you anyone who has been wearing an HSM prior to this year has not been adequately protected? The Shox is a gimmick just like when Reebok put air pumps in their shoes. 5 years from now the Shox will be remembered as a cute novelty |

I remember the same thing being said when someone put a suspension fork on a mountain bike. Now you can't buy one without one.
I just don't like the FX helmet because it's big, ugly, and looks like I should be jousting in it.

To each his own, I think the saying goes. I like the FX a lot. As far as the shocks are concerned, I don't know if they help or not, although I have taken a few shots to the face and they haven't even fazed me. What I like about it is that it is a lot lighter, and a heck of a lot cooler than any other HSM I have worn. As I have stated in other posts, my head stays cooler in it than it does when I am working the bases with my hat on.
I haven't tried the All Star flagship model, so I can't say if it's better or worse. It wouldn't matter anyway, because what works great for some may not work for others. Trying to belittle others for their choice in equipment is pointless anyway, and only gets you in trouble. There are certain safety standards, for sure, but once you get into the high-dollar stuff, it starts to boil down to personal preference.
Case in point, I just got a West Vest Platinum this week, and can't wait to try it out this weekend. I was at a Football Officials clinic yesterday, and Honig's was there selling football official's gear. When one of the Honig's guys asked me if I did other sports, I told him baseball. His first question after that was what type of CP I have, and I told him I just got a WVP. His response was, "I'm sorry." Well, guess what, Honig's dude? I'm sorry I won't be spending anymore of my hard earned cash with you, either! |

If I'm not mistaken, All Star was one of the first companies to come out with HSM's back when they debuted. Also, when I used to catch I used All Star stuff and really liked it. I'm confident that the top of the line All Star is comparable to the Shock when it comes to protection for the head and face. I tried on the Shock, and personally it just didn't feel right for some reason. I was just giving my opinion on it, so take it how you want. |

Yet another person taking the time to tell tell me what my words meant. Thank you.
According to me, I chose to have the O-P-T-I-M-U-M in protection and not the merely A-D-E-Q-U-A-T-E protection of the markedly heavier All-Star. If you are struck straight in the grill with a lighter helmet on, the trauma to your neck is lessened dramatically. There are many people in this world who are willing to spend less than a hundred extra for that benefit, and there are those who are willing to take years of extra heavy shots to save 80 bucks and possibly someday claim proof that it's a gimmick and they're too smart to fall for it.
Well, I'm one of those extravagant fools who fell for that less-head-and-neck-trauma gimmick. _________________ "I may not always be right, but I'm never wrong." |

The All-Star is very good and they did invent it and they look great.
But the Wilson is considerably lighter and cooler and has better visibility, but looks different. So to those who like a hot, heavy, restrictive, but really good-looking helmet mask, All-Star is a terrific choice. _________________ "I may not always be right, but I'm never wrong." |
